aeronautical engineering. While enrolled at Parks in St. Louis, he met his wife of 72 years, Virginia Seay Covington. Following service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he returned to the Martin Company in Baltimore, Md., as a flight test engineer. His work there involved test and development of both military and civilian aircraft.
After leaving Martin, he continued to fly as a private pilot, including duties as the company pilot at his family's business, the Harbor Sales Company. His experience as sales manager for Harbor Sales Company propelled him into leadership positions with Sales and Marketing Executives International, a professional organization where he eventually became an international director. Don is fondly remembered for his regular attendance at board and committee meetings as well as his habitual support of SMEI's international conferences. Don was installed as Director Emeritus of SMEI in honor of his commitment and service to the organization.
Following the retirement of his father, he became president of Harbor Sales Company and led the company for a period of 30 years.
He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Covington Welzel; two sons, Captain Donald K. Covington III, U.S. Navy (retired), Duncan Covington; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
