Why Renew Your Professional Certification?

The public and stakeholders rely on certifying organizations like SMEI to ensure that certificants participate in ongoing programs of recertification.  By demonstrating appropriate rigor in renewal requirements, SMEI enables certificants to show that they've met continued competence requirements in their profession and allows the public to have confidence in their skills.

Renewal hours

To retain the CSE®, CME® and/or SCPS® credential, a certified individual must accumulate 20 hours of qualified continuing education or professional development or 10 hours of qualified continuing education and 10 qualifying hours in other areas--such as leadership, instruction, or writing--every year and submit a completed Certification Renewal Report form along with the appropriate fee.

Qualifying Continuing Education and Professional Development 

As a general rule in order to qualify, education and professional development activities would be those that contribute to your development as a sales and marketing professional.  These could include studies and activities in business and management related to your employment (e.g. logistics management, project planning etc.) in addition to sales and marketing related activities as detailed in the following sections.

Conferences, Workshops, Seminars, or Courses

Relevant continuing education offerings including those available through SMEI, and qualifying programs of SMEI affiliates and chapters, are acceptable. Delivery may be by face-to-face, audio conference (with or without web casting), or online (asynchronous).

Hours Approved:

1 hour for each clock hour, up to a maximum of 3 hours for each half-day program or 6 hours for each full day program. 
Programs of less than one hour of contact time with education content are not approved. This would apply to most breakfast, lunch or dinner speaker programs.

Documentation Required if Audited:
  •  Copy of the program brochure listing topics and agenda (including time spent on continuing education versus meals, breaks, etc.)

Exclusions

  • Internal company courses, workshops or seminars, unless approved in advance by the SMEI Accreditation Board of Trustees
  • Courses, seminars or workshops focused on product knowledge
  • Academic Coursework

Course taken for credit

Courses on sales, sales management or marketing management at an accredited college or university, regardless of the delivery (e.g., face-to-face, independent study/correspondence, online).

Hours Approved:
  • 15 hours per earned semester credit
  • 14 hours per earned trimester credit
  • 10 hours per earned quarter credit

Examples:

  • A 3-credit semester course would earn 45 hours.
  • A 2-credit quarter course would earn 20 hours.
Documentation Required if Audited:
  • Copy of an official transcript and a course description
  • Learning Group
  • Preplanned group learning activities of in-depth study of specific topics(s) related to sales (SCPS®), sales or management (CSE® and/or CME®) that include a minimum of three participants and provide for group interaction.
Hours Approved:
  • 1 hour for each clock hour, up to a maximum of 20 hours
Exclusions:
  • Learning groups with all participants from the same employing organization are not approved for hours,unless approved in advance by the SMEI Accreditation Board of Trustees.
Documentation Required if Audited:
  • Correspondence identifying group participants, meeting dates, agendas, topics discussed, and name/contact information of group organizer.

Self-Study Programs

Educational materials used for individual, self-paced study. Examples include asynchronous courses, print-based publications, and any combinations of these media.

Hours Approved
  • 1 hour for each clock hour, up to a maximum of 20 hours
  • The hours approved will be determined by peer reviewers of the individual programs.
Exclusions:
  • All self-study programs must have prior approval by the SMEI Accreditation Board of Trustees.
Documentation Required if Audited:
  • Proof of purchase and/or completion by self-study provider (receipt, test scores, etc.)

Leadership, Instruction, or Writing

  • A maximum of 10 hours may be used in the category towards the required hours for renewal.
  • 2 hours of credit will be given per year for service as an officer of an association, or professional society, or for service as chairman, vice-chairman of a committee, section, or special interest group.
  • 2 hours of credit will be given for each course/workshop that is instructed.
  • 2 hours of credit will be given for each article, chapter or book written.
Other Reminders
  • Renewal Fees: $55 per year for an SMEI member, or $95 per year for a non-member (Fees subject to change.)
  • Renewals forms must be received no later than 30 days after the anniversary of the certification date or a reinstatement fee of $150 will be added on to the renewal. (Fees subject to change.)
  • Renewal forms will not be accepted more than 6 months after the anniversary of the certification.
  • Certified Individuals may renew early. However, educational or leadership/instructional hours for the renewal must be earned within the appropriate annual interval.
Filing Extensions
  • A Certified individual may apply to the SMEI Accreditation Board of Trustees for a filing extension of the professional renewal requirements.
  • The request for the filing extension must be submitted in writing to the Board prior to 30 days of the year ending your renewal cycle. Extension can be granted to a Certified individual one time only and are not granted for a period of more than one year, subject to the review of the Board.
  • Applicants approved for filing extension must accumulate a total of 20 hours in continuing education in the year that the filing date is extended. 
Lifetime Certification

Beginning at the age of 62 years, individuals may apply for lifetime certification, providing:

  • they have maintained their certification status in good standing for the previous 5 years
  • the individual is permanently retired
  • the individual pays a one-time fee of $150 USD (Fees subject to change.)
